The Step-by-Step Process

Please take a few minutes to review our process and what you can expect, below. We follow the same process and steps with every MRM project and client. Some of the items listed here might not apply to your particular project with us, as is determined by the options you chose on our proposal. However, the process is generally the same. As always, please let us know if you have any questions at all!

Step One: Discovery & Research

Before any of our work begins, we will ask that you complete our project intake form and agree to our terms of service. This intake form is brief, but it helps us understand your vision and the work necessary to bring that to life. Our terms of service just help keep us all on the same page so there is no misunderstanding as we work together.

Once we receive the completed intake form, we will reach out to schedule our free discovery call. The call will give us a chance to discuss your form submission and allow us both to ask any necessary questions before moving forward. If after this initial call, we believe it’s necessary to complete a more thorough discovery process and/or brand consultations, or if you have selected any of our coaching or strategy options, we will provide you with the information for those at this stage.

After our call, we will create a proposal and estimate specific to your project. Once you accept the proposal and sign our agreement, we will request a 30% non-refundable deposit to lock in your place in our queue. This deposit is payable via PayPal, check, or credit card.

If you are placed on our waitlist or do not have an immediate project start date, we usually ask you to use this time to gather necessary direction and ideas so we are ready to move forward promptly when we reach your start date.

Step Two: Design Planning, Concept(s) Creation, and Approval

Using the information we receive from you during discovery, as well as our own research of comparable brands, we’ll provide a moodboard or vision board to set the tone for the design concepts. Implementing the feedback you provide, we will present you with 2-3 brand concepts for review and refine one style direction to create your final logo.

We will only allow two revision round(s) to the logo/brand once a style option is chosen. When your primary logo is complete, we will provide a full brand board and style guide, your primary logo, requested variations and/or sub marks, and all approved brand elements.

Step Three: Social Media and Print Branding

If social media or print branding is included in your project, we will design those items for you at this stage. We will create a cohesive and seamless look across your social media platforms, as well as business cards, stationery, and any other included items.

Step Four: Additional Brand Coaching, Strategy, or Implementation

We offer fully customizable coaching and consultation, strategy and action plan, and management and implementation options for all new or expanding brands. If you selected any of these options during our intake process, or if you choose to add these to your project scope, we will work together to create a package that works best for your goals and your budget.

We provide brand audits, which include a detailed report of your current brand presence, along with practical action steps you can manage on your own to build brand awareness. Or, if you’d prefer, we can develop a thorough brand and marketing strategy specific to you, your business or ministry, or your product or book, and our team would be thrilled to help you implement this plan to maximize your growth.

Step Five: Project Add-Ons and Final Payment

Once your beautiful new brand design is complete and optimized for success, we will send your invoice for the final payment. This invoice will also include any additional fees for revisions or project add-ons after our agreement was signed and accepted. When final payment is received, we will send over a detailed ‘Project Wrap-Up’ email, which will include any further recommendations from our team. We do recommend printing or saving this email or document for future reference. We’ll be available to answer questions or provide further assistance to you for the first 30 days after project launch. Any changes to the final files requested after the wrap-up email is sent will be billable time at our standard design or consultation rates.

Please Note: Some of these steps will not apply to all projects, and are determined by the package options chosen below.

Frequently Asked Questions

A mood board, sometimes called an inspiration or vision board, consists of a collage of images and is designed to evoke the intended mood or style of your brand. It serves as an inspirational tool to help kick off and guide the brand design process.

A brand board is a usually a single-page visual reference of your established brand identity – a cheat sheet for brand design usage and consistency. It provides an at-a-glance summary of the look and feel of your brand. A typical brand board includes the brand’s logos, color palette, fonts, and imagery. It may also include icons, patterns, and illustrations.

A brand board ensures consistency across your brand’s visuals. It directs clients, outside designers and/or anyone creating visual elements for your brand what fonts, colors and graphic elements to use. This ensures brand authority and recognition.

A wireframe is a skeletal blueprint or framework that outlines the basic design and functions of a website. The goal of a wireframe is to quickly and easily communicate:

  • The contents of the page
  • The page structure and layout
  • How the site will function from one page to the next

A mockup shows what the final product is going to look like and typically contains (when available) real text content, graphics and photos. The web developer will use a designer’s mockup as a guide for inclusion of, sizing and placement of all final content.

A brand design compiles a complete and consistent look for a company, person or product across all visual representation. It ensures how the logo, fonts and colors are used so that your visual pieces all reflect the same style and therefore create brand recognition.

A logo is simply a graphic representation of a company, person or product. It may be comprised of wording, a graphic element or a pairing of the two. Yet without an established brand design, there is no guidance on how it will be used from one visual presentation to another (e.g. website, company stationary, promotional advertising, etc.).

Golden rules of logo design:

  • Keep it simple, keep it simple, keep it simple. A logo should clearly represent an organization’s identity. It doesn’t have to say everything about your organization, but it should reflect the focus and goal of your organization.
  • Logos should be effective at a large and small scale.
  • Logos should be effective in color and black & white.

We require textual content and pictures (if available). Please keep in mind that designers are not always writers by nature. Taking your content and making it dynamic and purposeful is our specialty. If you need help with your textual content, MRM does offer assistance from an on-staff editor at an additional cost.

For print design, we need the dimensions of the final piece and how it folds, if applicable. It’s also helpful to know ahead of time who will be printing the piece, as some printers require custom specifications to be met for their print files.

To begin with your site design project, we will request the following as your initial “homework”:

  • Textual content and photos (if available) for each page within the website.
  • An overview of your organization, it’s purpose and what you need the website to accomplish. Is it only to inform your readers? Are you trying to elicit a response or action from your readers?
  • An idea of the style of design you prefer which may be based on the market trend, your personal style, or the goal and personality of the organization.

All current websites are expected to use responsive design (mobile-friendly). On average, most websites receive over 90% of their traffic from users on mobile devices, whether phones, tablets, or smaller laptops. Responsive websites are designed so they automatically scale the content and elements to fit the screen size on which they are being viewed. If the design is not mobile-friendly, the user’s experience is impeded greatly, requiring them to stretch or scroll the content excessively to access the information. Effective in 2018, Google will now penalize non-responsive websites, giving them a poorer rank in search results.

User experience is the top priority in all well-designed websites. Creating a design that is attractive and functional, regardless of the device used to view it, is our specialty.

In short, no. We own the licenses to the font files used in your project. However, we are happy to provide a brand board or style guide relevant to your project, with the font names included. If you’d like to purchase these fonts, just let us know and we can get that sorted for you!

The original or “native” design files are not included in any project. If you would like to purchase an extended license and access to these original files, please let us know and we can create a separate agreement invoice for these files.

You will own copyright to the final, completed product included with your agreement. We will maintain copyright for the individual pieces used to create your final product. If you would like to purchase copyright to the native design or formatting files, please let us know and we can create the necessary documentation and invoice for that.
